Science Program Specialist

Position Summary

Develop and present a variety of science-based educational programs both on-site and at other venues throughout the region. Programs will emphasize regional ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental elements and incorporate a variety of related sciences. Also assist environmental education programs at other Partnership for the Sounds (PfS) facilities, enhance PfS social media presence, and support general facility operations.  

Status

Standard week 30-35 hours, with additional hours on a regular basis. Some weekend and evening availability needed.

Job Tasks

  • Develop and deliver a variety of programs, activities and events that will take place both at the Estuarium and at other venues such as schools and local festivals. Topics must appeal to various age groups, interests, and community sectors. Programs for schools must meet grade-level science curriculum goals as set by the NC Dept. Of Public Instruction.  

  • Work with local and regional partners to develop cooperative programs, activities, and events that will take place at the Estuarium and throughout the region.  

  • Keep exhibits in Exhibit Hall clean and wiped down and notify Supervisor of any exhibits not proper working order. 

  • Publicize and promote Estuarium activities to various audiences. 

  • Actively engage with all segments of the local community to generate interest in, knowledge of, and contributions to the Estuarium. 

  • Partner with Guest Relations to write and send out monthly newsletter. 

  • Assist with general facility operations as needed. 

  • Serve as only staff person on duty on scheduled Saturdays; also serve as staff on duty for evening rentals on occasional basis. 

  • Support organizational activities of the Partnership for the Sounds, including educational programs at other PfS facilities and various events.  

Skills and Abilities

  • Degree in sciences or education preferred; equivalent experience in environmental conservation or related field considered.

  • Must be able to deliver science-based programs and work effectively with people of all ages/backgrounds.

  • Ability to utilize social media and other internet applications to publicize programs and other information required.

  • Ability to lift 30+ pounds and hike through difficult terrain required.

  • Creativity and enthusiasm essential.

  • Skills/background in any of the following is helpful: regional history, boating, canoeing, wildlife identification, regional environmental issues, or art/music.

  • Must support PfS mission of environmental education and sustainable community development and be willing to work cooperatively with all staff and community partners.

  • Participation in various organizational activities required.

  • Regional travel required (mileage reimbursement provided for use of personal vehicle).

  • Some weekend and evening hours required.

  • Must reside in or be willing to relocate to a PfS county.
